Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)

Introduction

Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) is a strong base, typically supplied as an aqueous solution. It is used in the manufacture of biodiesel, soap, and various chemicals. It is highly corrosive and reacts with acids and organic materials, requiring careful handling procedures.

Hazard Summary

  • Strongly corrosive to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
  • Can cause severe chemical burns and permanent eye damage.
  • Reacts exothermically with acids and water.
  • Slippery solution increases fall risk in case of spillage.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Mandatory PPE for handling KOH:

  • Chemical splash goggles + Face shield
  • Alkali-resistant gloves (nitrile/neoprene)
  • Long-sleeve chemical-resistant apron/suit
  • Rubber boots
  • Respirator in mist-prone or enclosed areas

Storage & Handling Guidelines

Storage

  • Store in tightly closed HDPE containers.
  • Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location.
  • Use secondary containment trays.
  • Keep away from acids, metals, and moisture.

Handling

  • Only trained personnel should handle KOH.
  • Ensure proper PPE and access to emergency showers.
  • Always add KOH to water when diluting (never reverse).
  • Avoid contact with aluminum, zinc, or other reactive metals.
  • Use corrosion-resistant equipment for transfer.

Spill Management

During Transportation

  • Park vehicle in safe zone, assess from distance.
  • Wear full PPE before approaching.
  • Use sand or dry inert material to absorb the solution.
  • Neutralize with dilute acetic acid if safe.
  • Collect residue into alkali-resistant containers.

On Factory Floor

  • Alert area, use barricades and warning signs.
  • Use PPE before entering spill zone.
  • Absorb spill with dry sand or neutralizer.
  • Scoop into HDPE drums for disposal.
  • Rinse area with large volume of water.

First Aid Procedure

Skin Contact

  • Rinse with plenty of water for 15–20 minutes.
  • Remove contaminated clothing.
  • Seek medical attention.

Eye Contact

  • Flush eyes immediately with water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Lift eyelids to ensure full irrigation.
  • Urgent ophthalmologic attention needed.

Inhalation

  • Move to fresh air.
  • Administer oxygen if breathing is labored.
  • Get immediate medical help.

Ingestion

  • Do NOT induce vomiting.
  • Rinse mouth and give water if conscious.
  • Get immediate medical help.

Emergency Equipment Checklist

  • Eye wash stations and safety showers
  • Spill containment kits with alkali-neutralizers
  • Full PPE kits near KOH storage
  • Emergency communication system
  • Neutralizer (e.g., dilute vinegar or citric acid)
  • Alkali-resistant collection drums

Waste Disposal

  • Neutralize using dilute acid (e.g., acetic acid).
  • Collect in labeled alkali-resistant HDPE containers.
  • Label as “KOH Waste – Hazardous”.
  • Dispose via certified hazardous waste handler.
